Iron Lessons in Escondido & North County San Diego
Iron lessons focus on better contact, better start line, better compression and more predictable ball flight with the clubs you use to attack greens.
Better iron play starts with better contact and a clearer swing plan.
Iron shots expose setup, low point, face control, path, balance and sequencing. When those pieces are off, golfers hit fat shots, thin shots, pulls, pushes, hooks, slices or weak contact.
I use GCQuad data, video and simple instruction to show what is happening and what to fix first.
Simple priorities. Clear feedback. Written next steps.
Every private lesson is built around understanding what is actually happening, what to fix first, and how to practice it without leaving confused.
Ball first, then turf.
Great golf is great contact, not a perfect-looking swing. For irons, the most important skill is low point control: the club should strike the ball first and the ground after the ball.
Low Point Control
The club needs to bottom out in the right place. The goal is ball first, then ground after.
Finish On The Lead Side
Pressure should finish into the lead side so the golfer is not leaning back and trying to lift the ball.
Short Swings First
Waist-to-waist swings help build clean contact before the golfer adds speed or full swing length.
The line drill: miss forward, not behind.
Draw a line on the ground or use a line on a mat. Place the ball just in front of the line. The goal is simple: strike the ball, then brush the ground in front of the line.
This trains the golfer to move the low point forward instead of hitting behind the ball, trying to lift it, or swinging too hard too soon.
Short swings build great contact.
If contact is poor, I usually make the swing smaller first. Clean contact on a small swing is the foundation for better full iron shots.
What happens during an iron lesson?
I keep the lesson focused on the biggest issue first, then gives you a practice structure that makes sense for your game.
Setup and grip check
We check grip, posture, ball position, alignment and balance before chasing swing changes.
Low point and strike
GCQuad and video help show whether contact is centered and whether the club is reaching the ball correctly.
Face and path
You learn how face angle and swing path affect start line and curve.
Sequence and finish
I explain the body, arms and hands sequence in simple terms.
Drills and recap
You leave with focused drills and a written recap.
Data and video are used to explain the lesson, not overcomplicate it.
The goal is not to bury you in numbers. The goal is to use the right information to make the fix clear, simple and repeatable.
Common questions about iron lessons.
What is the most important skill for solid iron contact?
Low point control. For irons, the goal is ball first, then turf. The club should strike the ball before it brushes the ground.
What is the line drill for iron contact?
Draw a line on the ground or use a mat line, place the ball just in front of it, and practice brushing the ground in front of the line after the strike. The goal is to miss forward, not behind.
Can you help with fat or thin iron shots?
Yes. Fat and thin shots are often low-point, setup, balance or sequence problems.
Do you use GCQuad for iron lessons?
Yes. GCQuad can show strike, launch, spin, carry, direction and delivery patterns.
Is this for mid-irons and long irons?
Yes. Iron lessons can cover short, mid and long irons depending on what you need.
Lead shoulder movement affects low point.
For irons, I often connect contact to how the body stays in posture. The lead shoulder works down in the backswing, stays down briefly in transition, then works up and around so the club can bottom out in the right place.
Learn the down, down, then up sequence
Why iron contact often breaks down.
Iron shots expose the downswing order. If the hands fire first, the golfer may cast or flip. If the arms fire first, the club can get pulled down, steep or outside the correct path. If the torso spins first, the arms can get trapped and contact suffers.
My 4-Speed Gearbox helps organize iron contact: lead-side knee and pressure shift, torso turn, arms returning in front, then hands and wrists releasing through impact.
